Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Shari Dunn.
I am a former practicing attorney, nonprofit executive, foundation funder, journalist (yes, I was a news anchor), adjunct professor, now author, and, fun fact, a game show winner (which always seems to be the thing people find most interesting!).
My book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work, was recently published by HarperCollins. That is a whole other story about the big business of books.
Qualified is a deep dive into race and the workplace, centered around a concept I call competency checking — the practice of holding primarily Black people, but also other people of color and women, to a higher and harsher bar for employment, advancement, and retention.
The book does not just skim the surface; it digs into our history and says the things others often dance around.
Please check out the book 'Qualified' and consider becoming a paid subscriber, whether you, your team, or your friends. There is a wealth of information available to help you fight back in this current moment.
