“ And yet we push on from those dear souls who were freed in a strange land with no resources. And still we rise.
So celebrate Juneteenth. Reflect on Juneteenth. But don’t forget we are still fighting for true freedom.
And if you want to make the promise of freedom real, push back against the “anti-woke” crowd, enforce civil and human rights, and help eradicate anti-Blackness. Because, as Fannie Lou Hamer said in 1971, over 106 years after that first Juneteenth:
I don't know if you remember, but I remarked earlier to being born in Texas. It is with deep regret that I knew nothing of these celebrations as I grew to adulthood there. I left Texas in 1977 at 20 and life there was still separate and unaware for most people there. My knowledge of history was limited to what was taught in the public schools. You would think such a red letter day as Juneteenth would be noted, but if it was I didn't remember. I love studying genealogy because it is a way to personalize history. I am so proud that Black Americans are reclaiming their cemeteries and finding their hidden but not forgotten ancestors. I hope someday there will be some acknowledgement and restitution for the unforgivable stain of slavery. I do not believe the Civil War actually ended. I believe the Insurrection has continued to this day. It will never end until we finally eliminate the idea that some are better than others, deserve more power, and are allowed to rule. We need to teach our children from the actual Constitutions of the States in Rebellion. It will be then that the idea of the Lost Cause will be reveal in all its ugly truth. We should have tried the leaders of the States in Rebellion for their treason. But when Lincoln was assassinated all that became impossible. When the history of Black America from the 1600's is integrated and the history of white America is properly reinterpreted perhaps America will become the Nation it was hoped to be. After all we are all one family, the family of humankind. I wish everyone the Joy of Liberation on Juneteenth and pray Sisyphus gets that damn boulder to stay at the top of the hill where it belongs.

We are still working on it. 160 years later.”
